Neuroprotective Properties With CBD
Does CBD Have Neuroprotective Properties?
Many researchers now believe that CBD has neuroprotective properties. Moreover, they believe CBD can interact with the endocannabinoid system and other systems that send signals to the brain. In doing so, they believe it provides some benefits to those with neurological disorders.
In fact, treating neurological disorders, such as epilepsy or multiple sclerosis, is now of the most-studied uses for CBD and CBD products. Research in this area is relatively new, with CBD still a great unknown overall. However, several studies show promising results.
Moreover, a European drug-using CBD was approved for use in treating rare forms of epilepsy.
Sativex and Other Studies
Sativex is an oral spray that contains both CBD and THC. For people with multiple sclerosis, it is a safe and effective means of reducing muscle spasms. In fact, one study shows that Sativex reduced the occurrence of spasms in about 75% of a group of 276 people who have multiple sclerosis that was otherwise resistant to medications.
Another study gave 0.9-2.3 grams of CBD oil per pound of body weight to 214 individuals with severe epilepsy. The study found that this reduced their seizures by a median of 36.5%.
Additionally, another study shows that CBD oil led to a significant reduction in seizures among children with Dravet syndrome compared to a placebo. Dravet syndrome is a complex epilepsy disorder found in children.
However, it’s crucial to remember that some people in these studies experienced adverse reactions to treatment with CBD. These included fever, diarrhea, and convulsions.
CBD and Neuroprotective Properties
While more thorough and conclusive research is needed, many researchers study CBD’s neuroprotective properties’ potential effectiveness in treating other neurological diseases. For instance, several studies showed that CBD treatments improved quality of life as well as sleep quality in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Moreover, in animal and test-tube studies, CBD shows potential as a means to address inflammation and potentially prevent some of the neurodegeneration we associate with Alzheimer’s disease.
In one long-term study, researchers provided CBD to mice that were genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s disease. In doing so, they found that it helped to prevent their cognitive decline.
How to Shop for CBD Products
If you are interested in CBD for its potential neuroprotective properties, consult your doctor to ensure no adverse interactions between it and your medication(s). Your doctor will let you know whether there’s potential for CBD to address any issues you have with sleep, chronic pain, or quality of life.
As you search for CBD products, it’s important to avoid websites that tout CBD as a cure-all. While we love CBD and Hemp products, we understand that we all need more research to support the claims made. Moreover, it’s crucial that you find a brand you trust to provide high-quality CBD and hemp-derived products.
